Observe Earth. Understand Change. Support Research.

What do you see in the future?

Terry Callaghan

HONORARY PRESIDENT

I have to be optimistic, and particularly when I'm talking to young kids in schools. I can't leave them with pessimism. But one thing is for sure they will see a different world than we see, experience different things. My grandkids probably will never see a glacier in Russia, for example. There are animals that they will never see. And this is all extremely sad, but of course there will be a world there. I'm a pessimist because it will be a world where I'm not comfortable.

I hope that we will learn from past mistakes, but every time something big happens, it shows that we don't learn from the past. My prediction is that the Arctic will provide the future of planet Earth, because already hot areas will dry out, populations will move, there will be mass migrations out of the areas that are suffering.

The Arctic has massive space, massive resources, water, inland that will be supporting agriculture in the future, can support much greater populations than now. At the moment, we have really great problems with managing a few thousands of migrants. In the future, it will be tens of millions. So how do we plan for that?

Margareta Johansson

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Changes. Many changes. There will be new opportunities, and there will be challenges. And I would guess that challenges will be more than opportunities. But if we gather as much information as possible about what's going on in the Arctic, then we will have a better opportunity to adapt to the future changes.

Hannele Savela

ACCESS COORDINATOR

Hope. With the help from the research and younger generations coming being more aware of the challenges ahead of us, I think there's hope that things will take a turn towards the better.

And you, how do you see tomorrow?

INTERACT Non-Profit Association is the result of more than 20 years of scientific work and cooperation in the Arctic, Boreal and Alpine regions.
